You may have noticed I’ve been mixing in more content here recently focused on content creators. It’s not that you brand and agency folks aren’t the primary focus of the show. You are. But if you’re reading between the lines, the advice that some of our guests have had recently about helping creators build and grow their business … well, it applies to you, too.
Kind of a two birds with one stone approach, if you will.
In this episode of Winfluence, we’ll follow in that direction a bit. Dean Mercado is today’s guest. He’s a business coach who also happens to run a digital marketing agency. So he brings a couple of nice perspective to the table for you brands, agencies and content creators. His Mind Stretch Methodology to level up your business came after over 10,000 hours of coaching businesses to do just that.
The thing he brings to the table that got me excited to bring all of you was his concept of clone the owner. It’s a lesson in prioritization, hiring, outsourcing, training and delegation to take the tasks that aren’t the best use of your time off your plate and onto someone who is an owner clone to execute for you.
I don’t know about you, but I know in my own businesses, working a solid process and workflow that optimizes my time and energies is probably my number one problem. I thought we could all use a good lesson in how to clone ourselves and level up at the same time.

Dean, I know you spend a lot of your time these days doing the business coaching thing, and we’ll get into that, but I know you also run a digital marketing agency. So tell us the Dean Mercado story. How did you get into this racket?
Dean Mercado [00:05:30]:
It’s been a long haul. I went your traditional route of college, job, family. College, job, family. What we were, I guess, brainwashed to do back going back to the 80s when I was coming out of high school. So I did the college thing, went to corporate America route. After about a dozen years, I started to realize, wow, my feet are really sleeping. I was born an entrepreneur. It took me a while to figure out that that was my destiny. So when I finally came around to it, I was like, you know what? Before I get too deep into life and I can’t make the changes I want to make, let me look into starting something and creating a business that makes sense for me, creating a lifestyle that made sense for me. My wife, who was my fiance at the time, was supportive of that, and we kind of went for it. But as we stepped into the entrepreneur world here, I was coming out of college thinking I was all that. I was so smart, things were no problem for me. I’m a big, tough, smart guy. I got my rear end kicked everywhere because I didn’t know what I didn’t know, right? I thought, wow, I did great in the business world, in corporate America, why shouldn’t that translate into the entrepreneurial world? Different animal, right? As you may attest to it’s, a different animal. And so I kicked and screamed and clawed for a couple of years as I got my rear end kicked everywhere. And then it finally wasn’t until I started reaching out for some help, okay, there’s got to be an easier way. And once I started reaching out for help, I thought, oh, that’s what’s going on. Okay, now I’m starting to see a little bit here. And by doing that, that’s what pushed me towards the coaching side of it. Because I was like, you know what? If I could help anyone else not do this, not go through this pain, not struggle, suffer, not put off doing whatever they wanted to do with their family and their life because they’re in pain, I’d like to be able to help. So I first came out with online marketing muscle. That was after spending the past twelve to 15 years in It. And it I decided I hated it. So online marketing Muscle was kind of still a little bit I get to play with technology, but I don’t have to live in technology, right? So online Marketing muscle came out at about 2004. And at the time, we were an early bird. We were a pioneer in the digital marketing space. Digital marketing wasn’t the term yet. We called it Internet marketing. I got laughed at by my peers by going into this. Why would you what? I thought you were this smart guy. What a jerk you are. Why would you go into a field that’s a fad? This Internet thing is a fad. And I’m like, really? Okay, I sense something was there. And that’s the entrepreneur. When you’re an entrepreneur, you smell opportunity. And I smelled the opportunity, and thank goodness I did. 20 years later, we’re still here. Right? I’m grateful for that. Along the way, what ended up happening was more and more people were starting to ask about coaching. You know what? I get that. You could build us this website. You could develop this technology for us. You could do this, do that. Instead of just giving me the fish, can you teach me how to fish? Sure. Right. And that’s where that started spawning from, and eventually it ended up dominating where that became the main thing everybody was asking for. So a couple of years back, I decided, you know what, I need to split the two. Because when it comes to branding and things of that nature, I didn’t want me, Dean Mercado, getting in the way of online marketing muscle and online marketing muscle getting in the way of Dean Mercado, which is not only me, but it’s a brand, right, it’s my brand. So I wanted those two entities to be able to take on their own life. So at some point if I decide I want to sell online marketing muscle, and I’m not saying I do, but I don’t want to restrict that option and I certainly don’t want to go with the company. Well, we’ll buy online marketing muscle, but Dean, you’re going to have to come and work for us for the first couple of years until no, can’t do it. So I built something that can stand on its own. That was the intention. Right. And it’s an ongoing pursuit. There is no final destination. When you own a business, there’s always okay, what’s next? As you probably well know, Jason right, what’s next? So it’s been quite an interesting haul of a journey. I am an avid learner. I am always learning. I learn daily and I encourage every single entrepreneur out there. Listen to all these great podcasts, the things you can learn from them, watch the great videos, attend the great events, get into some great mastermind. Always be learning. Things change, things evolve and you need to change and evolve with them. Right? So yeah, it’s been a hell of, a, hell of a very true. But college was one thing, but I spent the last 20 years unlearning some of that college and learning real life and hard knocks, street smart school. So it’s been quite interesting.
Jason Falls [00:11:01]:
I’m sure it has. So I know along the way, and you mentioned that clients of your digital marketing agency started to come to you and ask for coaching. I wonder when did that happen and how did they approach you? Was it more teach me how to run my website and that kind of led into more business leadership types things or did it start out with, hey, you’re a successful entrepreneur, I want to know more about the entrepreneur thing because I think those two things could be a little different.
Dean Mercado [00:11:29]:
Yeah, it was the latter. It was the wow, we see you, we see your success, we see what you’re accomplishing. I want that too, can you just show me how to do that? And sometimes it stemmed a little bit too from they see what my website was doing here. I was this small company and we were dwarfing the performance of large corporations because we knew what we were doing and we were very strategic on what we were doing. We knew we didn’t have to do all this crap. We just do the things that matter and if you focus on the things that matter, the things that you want start to show up in your world. Right? So our clientele started to see that and I was always an avid speaker, so I was always out there speaking at the events and doing that kind of thing. So people would see me, and I want that. Okay? So I went back to my wife and we’re like, you know what? We better put something together because people are asking for it. And hey, who am I to argue with? If we can make a lifestyle out of that and we can help good people navigate this small business arena, the entrepreneurial lifestyle, then fantastic. And it also stemmed a lot into personal and life coaching. Many of my clients have said, you know, sometimes the most impactful and impactful conversations we had was when we didn’t even talk about business, but we talked about life. Because no matter what, for an entrepreneur, we must realize they’re like this. Life and business are like that. And if you don’t get that, I mean, you will at some point, hopefully, but the sooner you come to terms with that, the better it gets for you. Trust me. It’s been quite interesting how that’s unfolded.
Jason Falls [00:13:21]:
So you mentioned that you knew what you were doing. You were very strategic in what you’re doing, and you did what mattered versus what didn’t. Now, when I hear that, I hearken back to my days 15 years ago talking about social media to brands, and back then they would say things like, well, that doesn’t matter. I’m going to focus on SEO or I’m going to focus on Ecommerce or whatever. So I’m curious if you go take me back a little bit. Were you one of those guys saying, hey, we’re not going to focus on this old social hippie stuff. We’re going to focus on the conversions and all that good stuff? What was your flavor of digital marketing that made that all successful?
Dean Mercado [00:14:01]:
Oh, yeah, well, I was an early adopter of social media. I’m naturally a social being. I’m a social animal. I love people. I know that. And I’ve always been clear that nothing happens in business without people. And I saw social media when it first showed up on the horizon as a huge opportunity to level the playing field. Because if you didn’t have the money to spend, you could always use sweat equity on social media and just invest in your time and become better at developing your brand, at developing your own sphere of winfluence. Because at the end of the day, yes, people will hire your company, but they’re hiring your company because you’re part of that company. They like the way you think. They like the systems you put together. They like what you’re about, how you show up for them, however that is. So, yes, I was huge on social media. I taught masterminds around it. I got everybody ramped up until I saw it going to crap. When I saw social media becoming what it started becoming in the last 5678 years, I started to veer off of it a little bit where I kind of just was a little bit more strategic on how I went at it and not so like all in on it. I didn’t like the censorship going on. I didn’t like the favoritism that we were starting to see. I mean, we were just seeing things that it just didn’t resonate with. It wasn’t as pure as it first appeared to be. So it was about looking at that and saying, but yeah, I was an early adopter, I loved it. And the last couple of years, many people would be like, well, how come you’re not on Facebook anymore? We don’t see any. Well, because it’s not what it once was, and there’s other things that I need to be doing with my time, and playing sometimes isn’t the thing.
Jason Falls [00:16:00]:
Yeah, I’m curious if that scenario, the devolution, if you will, of social media from what it used to be, which is much more pure organic conversations and things like that, and now it’s just become kind of just a cacophony of noise. I wonder if that turns social media channels into what the companies that make up social media want them to be, which is an ad platform. It’s really just a place to reach people with ads.
Dean Mercado [00:16:31]:
Absolutely, and I would firmly agree with you there. I saw it the same way where it was like there was clearly an agenda, so they were happy to allow it to deevolve the way it did, socially, organically, so that people would say, you know what, I can’t cut through the clutter on my own anymore. I have to pay to do that. And it became very apparent early on with Facebook that that’s where they were going and everybody seemed to kind of follow suit, and that’s cool. I don’t begrudge anybody for finding ways to make money with their business model. But with Facebook, you knew that was once you see it, you know that that was their agenda all along. You get enough subscribers, you seemingly assigning them up for free. But it’s not free. Nothing is free like that for sure. They’ve got your attention span. That’s the currency. Yeah.
Jason Falls [00:17:29]:
The day that Facebook went public, that was the day that everything changed, because now you have shareholders and you’re beholden to the market and you have to that bottom line. And that shuffled the deck a little bit. So real quickly, before we take a break here, I want to ask you, in your business, coaching and consulting with others, I’m curious what the common problems are you see in the entrepreneurs and businesses you coach and work with? And I asked that both because I’m guessing there are some common threads, but also I think the content creators who are also a version of an entrepreneur who listen to this show, I think they may need that AHA moment when they say, oh yeah, I’m a business owner, I have those problems too. So what are the common threads that you see in your coaching and consulting that you help people with?
Dean Mercado [00:18:16]:
Sure, there’s several common threads that I see quite often, and this may sound a little bizarre, but one of the biggest problems that I see is the fact that a lot of entrepreneurs really don’t know what they want. They don’t know what they want. They don’t know what they’re really trying to create. They’re playing a lot of follow to follower. Oh, so and so is doing that. So I got to go do that, too. No, you don’t. Right? That’s not your brand. That person already has that under control. We don’t need another one of them, right? Let alone your opportunity or your chance to create that. So not knowing what you want is a big problem with a lot of entrepreneurs. Monkey see, monkey do, follow the follower, whatever we want to call it. We see a lot of that crap going on out there. Attaching that to a why? Well, why do you want that? That’s another big challenge that we see all the time. So a lot of times they’ll say, oh, yeah, well, I want to create a multimillion dollar agency. Okay, well, do you have any idea what it takes, what the life of somebody who runs a multimillion dollar agency is like? Have you thought that through before? So a lot of the challenges we see are foundational challenges, and this is why a lot of small businesses don’t succeed. My opinion because we’re building them on a shoddy surface, a shoddy foundation. We’re not clear on what we want, why we want it. We don’t have proper vision. So I spend a lot of time teaching vision, putting people through a formula, a system to help them think that through because once they get clear on what you want, what they want, it’s so much easier to accomplish it. It really is. There are a thousand different ways you could accomplish the same thing with the tools available to you online today. So it’s another piece that we see, too, is that people don’t really understand what I falls their superpower is, and they don’t know how to step into it properly. So they want to become this special something, but they’re trying to do what she’s doing because it looks cool. But you know what? You suck at that. That’s not your thing. So either you got to go back to the drawing board and board and learn it, or you really have to just take a second and step back and say, okay, well, do I have any superpowers of my own? That if I was to bring them forward and nurture those, that I might stand out a little bit more, that I might stand the chance of becoming who I think I want to become. Right. And hopefully it’s not becoming her or becoming him. It’s becoming you, that best version of yourself. And that’s a huge mistake. I see so many entrepreneurs making out there, let alone the fact that a lot of them just think that this is all supposed to be so easy. Yeah, businesses is simple, but it’s certainly not easy. There are only so many moving parts. In a business, that part is simple. However, your execution of those parts is where it gets tough. So simple, but not easy. So those are just a small handful of what we see. And yeah, once we get foundational, then, yeah, a lot of them want to know, well, how do I build that brand or how do I get a proper website up there? What does it really need to be doing? What do I need to be doing to generate leads? Right? But again, very vague. A lot of what I see is they don’t really pinpoint what it is exactly they want. Well, how many leads and how do you know that you need that many leads? Right? So if I got you 1000 leads tomorrow, what are you going to do with them? What’s your system on how you’re going to handle those leads? Right? Are you going to let them fall through the crack? Do you have a system for how you’re going to deal with it? You may only need five clients. I don’t know. If you don’t know, how am I supposed to know? A lot of it is getting them clear, helping them see well.
Jason Falls [00:22:32]:
And I know you’ve got a nice little methodology and framework that helps business owners solve for a lot of that. So let’s take a break and then we’ll dig into that and more. When we come back, we’re talking to business coach and digital marketing agency owner Dean Mercado on Winfluence.
Dean Mercado [00:22:46]:
Don’t go away.
Jason Falls [00:22:54]:
Welcome back to winfluence. We’re talking to Dean Mercado today about how to level up your business. Okay, Dean, we laid the groundwork before the break by talking about the common problems business owners and entrepreneurs face. Now we’re ready to learn how to solve for them. So take us through. I believe it’s your Mind Stretch concept and how that can apply to help your business owners level up.
Dean Mercado [00:23:16]:
Sure, I’d be happy to. Now where The Mind Stretch comes from. I have a book called The Mind Stretch. You can probably see it behind me over there. This is kind of like the next iteration of that. That book was a bestseller ten years ago. It’s still as relevant today as it was back then, and that’s great. But the Mind Stretch has evolved, much like I’ve evolved over that time. And I would encourage every entrepreneur out there listening to evolve, allow yourself to evolve. So the Mind Stretch is all about evolving. We call it evolved to actualization. So in other words, evolved to what you’re supposed to become, right? Who you’re supposed to be, how you’re supposed to show up for the world. So with our methodology, there is a core design. So I want you to imagine there’s a circle in the middle. In that circle in the middle. That’s your core. That’s your vision, right, that sits at the core of this system, of this methodology around that we run in 90 day sprints. So we look at a business and we say, okay, what are the three big things we need to accomplish this quarter, these next 90 days? What has to happen in order for us to move closer to our vision, accomplish our mission, so to speak? So around that, we start with we plan, then we act, and then we reflect. And then rinse and repeat. We plan, we take massive action, and then we reflect. How did we do? Then we plan, act, reflect. So every 90 days, that circle, iterates around the vision that sits at the core. Now, on the outer band, there’s an outer band to this, and this one’s critical. This has to do with your mindset. Now, I want you to think of that outer band being like a rubber band that can mindstretch and grow, or it can constrain you. So I’ll always say your business will only grow to the degree that you do if you don’t grow the mindset. You’ll have this thing spinning like crazy on the inside, but it never expands. Your business never grows because you never grow. So we have to focus on growing. You right. And there’s a lot of personal development that happens there, as well as establishing that core vision in the middle. And then we run that trifecta circle, keep spinning and spinning on a quarterly basis. And this has been something we developed over the last 20 years of just coaching and coaching and coaching. I mean, I’ve logged well over 10,000 hours of one on one coaching. So I’ve worked with some really smart people. So I don’t claim to be. I created everything in my world on my own. No, I learned as much from my clients as they learned from me. I’m just a coach. I have a trained eye. I have trained ears. I know how to listen for things. I know how to see things that maybe they don’t see because they’re too close to it, if that makes sense. So through all that experience, I came up with this methodology, and we’ve got all the frameworks. Each one of those pieces I mentioned has their own framework, has their own templates, their own everything, their own formulas. So that when we work with a client, we’re able to actually produce results. We know exactly what we need to create, and we’re able to help them create it. Now, the great part is it really dovetails with online marketing muscle, which has a very similar methodology, but it’s slightly different. So it’s like, I want you to imagine my coaching business kind of helps people get their act together, get their foundation solid. Now they know exactly what they’re trying to do, and they’re like, Dean, can you help us with this? Yeah, sure. Hire my other company. They’ll do it for you. Those pieces you want to build, they’ll build it for you. So we get into the marketing automation, the websites and everything else. Digital marketing. So yeah, it’s a unique arrangement. That wasn’t originally the plan, but that’s what it evolved into. If you really pay attention and you listen to what do people want, how do they want to be helped? Right? And that’s what we created. That makes sense. Nice.
Jason Falls [00:27:31]:
Yeah, makes a ton of sense. Now another thing that I’ve noticed in your literature and I don’t know that this is directly connected to Mind Stretch, but I’m sure there’s some sort of correlation. The business processes and workflows for running a business have always been a challenge for me. I tend to keep everything in my head and try to do it too much of it myself. And then I’m talking to you last week and you said that I need to clone the owner. So I’m listening. How do I do that? What is this clone the owner concept?
Dean Mercado [00:28:00]:
Right now we step into online marketing muscle territory. So Clone the Owner, after a lot of things are identified with the Mind Stretch and foundations are built. Clone the owner was all about through coaching, coming up with conversations with clients where they’re like, you know, Dean, a lot of my problems will be solved if I just had ten of me. If I only had ten of me, I’d be able to do this and that and this and that, and I would never have any problems. I wouldn’t have to deal with hiring these people who are jerks and they’re just getting in the way and everybody sucks out there. Nobody wants to work and complain, complain. I heard it all so cloning. Owner stemmed out of that, where it was like, okay, well, what if we could tap into concepts like automation and concepts like delegation, proper delegation. Concepts like systems that would allow you to get out of your own way long enough to create a business that can actually grow and exist without you, but is based on your intelligence, based on your wisdom of the things you’ve learned over the years. So Clone the Owner, again is much like the Mindstretch, where the vision sits. At the core mindset is that outer band. Those two pieces are consistent between my two companies, but on the inner band of this one, the inner band is Team Systems and Controls or as we call it, Systems Team and Controls in that order in particular. So we got to build out the systems, then figure out what teams we need to run those systems and then what controls we need to put in place to help us understand as an owner. Are the systems we created proper and good? Are the teams we brought on to run those systems proper and good? Without those controls, we don’t know. We’re just allowing business to happen and we’re not putting the checks and balances in place. Now. In recent months we’ve added another layer which sits outside the system, teams and controls, but not as far out as the Mindset and that has to do with technology. So we added a technology layer in there because of things like AI. These are game changers. AI is a game changer. I liken it to like when the internet first came out, business was completely different. A year later, think about AI has been here at this time of this recording, what, six months?
Jason Falls [00:30:34]:
Yeah, popularly, popularly, exactly.
Dean Mercado [00:30:36]:
But the public really didn’t even know about it until early this year. Look what it’s doing already, look what people are starting to figure out. So we added that technology layer in there, which is things like automation, AI, which just they’re game changers. And they were that big of a piece of this puzzle that we felt we had to add it into the overall methodology and factor it in, as well as whatever new technologies are coming. And I’m sure as we’ve seen over the years, there’s always a new technology.
Jason Falls [00:31:07]:
There’s always something coming, right? Always something, always, exactly. This is awesome stuff, Dean. I know. Mind Stretch, obviously there’s a book component to it. You’ve got lots of resources and coaching and such for folks. Where can people find you and all that on the interwebs?
Dean Mercado [00:31:24]:
The easiest two places are Mercado.com, right? That’s my coaching company, my coaching website, and onlinemarketingmuscle.com, which is so if the Mind Shreds interest you more then Dean Mercado. If the cloning owner interests you more than the online marketing muscle socially, I play hardest on LinkedIn so you could find me on LinkedIn. I dabble a little bit in YouTube, but you find me on LinkedIn. It’s a good place to look for me. That’s good stuff.
Jason Falls [00:31:51]:
We’ll make sure that all those links are in the Show Notes. That will be available at Jasonfalls Co mercado. You can also go to Jasonfalls.com, click on articles in the upper right and find the episode that way. Dean, I appreciate the wisdom, my friend. I’m going to go clone myself now.
Dean Mercado [00:32:08]:
Fantastic, Jason. Thank you.
