My pal Chris Slater ran into a Google My Business Scammer this week. Slater is an SEO and SEM expert I work with on some personal website projects and with some of our clients at Cornett. He was chatting with the owner of an Italian restaurant he was visiting this week and gave the owner some tips on how he could improve his ranking for terms like “pizza” in local searches. The owner, now frustrated, said he got a phone call from a Google salesperson and paid to rank highly and didn’t understand why he didn’t.

Well, that’s because Google A) Doesn’t have phone sales people calling businesses asking to purchase things and B) Never guarantees rankings.

Chris’s new restaurant friend was duped by a Google My Business Scammer.

In this Friday food-for-thought episode, I cover what Google itself says about phone calls it does make, what types of service it uses and how you can spot a scammer if someone claiming to be with or from Google calls you. To see the full run-down of what Google has to say about the matter, visit its help page on scammers and phone calls at the Google My Business support site.
